JOHN W. DICKIE

PRACTICE

John W. Dickie practices Property Tax Assessment law, Residential Rent Control, Landlord and Tenant Law for landlords, and government relations.

John obtained a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours Economics) from Carleton University in 1977, and a Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B.) from McGill University in 1981.

John has practised residential rent control and landlord and tenant law since 1982. He acts for many of the largest residential landlords in Ottawa-Carleton, as well as many landlords of medium and small sized buildings. John is the Chair of the Eastern Ontario Landlord Organization, and Chair of the Rent Control Committee of the Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario, (FRPO). John is also President of the Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations. In 2004 and 2006, John was named Member of the Year by FRPO.

With David Lyman, John has co-authored Working With The Residential Tenancies Act, a legal text book published by Emond-Montgomery Publications. John has practised Municipal Property Tax Assessment law since 1992. He has published various articles and papers on property taxes and assessment which have been widely distributed in Ottawa-Carleton. He has represented the Building Owners and Managers Association (Ottawa) in the 1992 change to region wide assessment at 1988 market values, and in the Provincial property tax reforms in 1998. John also represents major residential landlords regarding property tax reform and the related rent reduction measures which affects multi-residential properties. John continues to represent these groups on policy matters.  John has also represented many property owners and managers before the Assessment Review Board, the Ontario Municipal Board and the Divisional Court.

John has also instructed at the Bar Admission Course of the Law Society of Upper-Canada, and has taught courses in private law and public law at Carleton University, and at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa. He has written and presented material for the Real Estate Board of Ottawa-Carleton, the Ontario Real Estate Association, and FRPO.

PERSONAL INTERESTS

My personal interests include running, reading, bridge playing and travelling.  I have travelled extensively in England, Scotland, and the ten provinces of Canada.  I have travelled less extensively in Ireland, France, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
